about

Martin Palmer and Dave Procter returned to the site of previous experimental audio tests in 2019, namely the sculpture "what does the fjord say?" in Trondheim harbour.

Armed with percussive sticks, contact microphones, audio recorders and the occasional toy and synth, they set about a full exploration of the sculpture and their own sonic ideas in and around the sculpture, using created and environmental sounds to answer the question posed by the sculpture. These recordings are Palmer and Procter's replies.

"What Does the Fjord Say?" is a collaborative release between Dave Procter and Martin Palmer, two experimental musicians who specialise in creating noise music. The release features an electroacoustic improvisation performed inside a sculpture with the same title by Ståle Sørensen at the ferry harbour in Trondheim, Norway.

Procter and Palmer's approach to music-making is rooted in experimentation and improvisation, and this release is a testament to their creativity and innovation in the genre. The duo employs a wide range of sound sources and techniques, including field recordings, feedback loops, and various electronic devices, to create a rich and dynamic soundscape that ebbs and flows throughout the piece.

The location of the performance is also a crucial element in the creation of the music. The sculpture by Sørensen provides a unique acoustic environment that shapes the sound and adds a sense of space and depth to the recording. The resulting sound is both chaotic and harmonious, reflecting the unpredictability of the environment and the improvisational nature of the musicians.

"What Does the Fjord Say?" is set to be released on Dret Skivor, a record label that specialises in experimental and avant-garde music, in the winter of 2023. This release promises to be a captivating and immersive listening experience that pushes the boundaries of what is possible in noise music. Fans of experimental music and those who appreciate the creative process behind improvisation will not want to miss this release.
